The Security Park at the Navy’s 2nd Fleet Headquarters is a sacred site for the defense of our country's maritime sovereignty. It was established to highlight North Korea's provocations, from the First Yeonpyeong Sea Battle in 1999 to the 2010 Yeonpyeong Island shelling incident. The key exhibits include the West Sea Defense Hall, the Victory Monument of the First Yeonpyeong Sea Battle, and the Memorial Stone for the Second Yeonpyeong Sea Battle. The Cheonan(PCC772) and the Patrol Ship Chamsuri-357 are displayed in their condition immediately following the attacks.
The West Sea Defense Hall is split into two floors. The first floor features sections titled "NLL and Naval Battles," which explain the background and importance of the Northern Limit Line(NLL), the boundary of the West Sea. It also describes in detail the processes of the First and Second Yeonpyeong Sea Battles and the Daecheong Sea Battle, including the response to North Korean provocations. Artifacts from the Second Yeonpyeong Sea Battle, where six heroes were died, are also displayed.
where six heroes were died, are also displayed.
The second floor features the "Cheonan(PCC772) Room," which records the ship's history and provides detailed accounts of its departure, the attack, and the results of the joint civil-military investigation. Personal items from the 46 heroes are displayed, allowing visitors to feel their presence. Additionally, information about the Yeonpyeong Island artillery attack is also exhibited.
The Victory Monument was erected on Jun. 15, 1999, to commemorate the complete victory in the NLL defense operation. The Memorial Stone was established to honor the six heroes who died during the Second Yeonpyeong Sea Battle on Jun. 29, 2002, when a North Korean naval vessel launched a surprise attack on the Chamsuri-357. The Chamsuri-357 is also displayed in its original form as it was at the time of the attack.
The Cheonan(PCC772) sank on Mar. 26, 2010, following a surprise torpedo attack by a North Korean submarine. After the ship was raised, the hull was transferred to the Security Park in Nov. 2013. To facilitate public viewing of the hull, a viewing platform, large exhibit structures, and a relief of the 46 heroes were constructed. These were completed by the end of Jun. 2014. The relief of the 46 heroes underwent additional enhancements, which were completed on Nov. 1, 2019, and it is now being maintained.
